Welcome

educate yourself on APD/CAPD

carrd made by someone who has it

* im not a doctor, im a teen who has dealt with it for a decade

What is it?

  • Auditory Processing Disorder/Central Auditory Processing Disorder is a hearing disorder, its when the hearing sends mixed messages to the brain

  • People who have it fine hearing, its mostly having a tough time understanding speech even though its easy/ clear to hear

  • For example, the phrase "Look at that over there," can be interpreted by someone who has APD/CAPD as "Look at the cat over there."

  • Its a rare disorder, only 3/4 percent of school age kids have it

  • YOU CAN'T diagnose yourself, you need to see a doctor because in order to get diagnosed you need a hearing test done.

  • it shares the similarities with ASD and ADHD

Characteristics

has trouble with:

tell the difference between separate sounds
focusing on one sound in a noisy setting
having trouble remembering what was just told (kinda like short term memory)
understanding and answering the order of sounds and words

Difficulty comprehending spoken language unless brief, clear and simple

Poor listening skills

Taking longer to respond when someone speaks

Easy to misinterpret something/someone

Often asking people to repeat themselves or saying “Huh?” or “What?”

What not to say/do

  • DO NOT make fun, belittle, or mock someone for not understanding a joke, it's hard to distinguish between tones and you being aggressive ain't helping

  • DO NOT become sarcastic when someone else asked you kindly to repeat yourself or asks for a simpler explanation

  • DO NOT EVEN try to and yell at someone (aggressively) for misunderstanding an situation.

  • ALSO DO NOT be mad that people with APD/CAPD "ruin the fun" of jokes and simple conversations, it's hard enough to understand your tone and you being mad at someone who just wants to understand? yea do not do it.

The effects

  • easily miss/ misunderstand important information (when an important assignment is due, or a test coming up)

  • problems to distinguish between the change of tones and voices

  • ex. telling someone what to do then making a joke.

  • the unfair criticism, criticize for everything we did wrong because we didn't understand it

  • bad grades in school despite great effort put into it

  • frustration

  • low self-esteem

  • difficulties with socializing

  • anxiety
